First edition, first issue with rustic printing on page 1, an illustration of Mr. Steyne on page 336 (later suppressed), "Mr. Pitt" for "Sir Pitt" on page 453, and an advertisement of, "The Great Hoggarty Diamond," before the text. Bound in contemporary/early smooth leather over boards with double rule gilded borders to the covers, 5 raised bands on the spine with gilded motifs, and a red leather title cell. "Bound by Wallace," stamp on the front-free-endpaper (ffep) verso. A small chip to the long edge of the ffep, and notes in pencil on first edition points on ffep verso from a former seller. The text and pages are very bright with only minor and infrequent spotting. A short, closed tear, to the interior of page 229/330 (very hard to see). Solid and square with light rubbing to the joints. With marbled endpapers and all edges gilt. Overall a near-fine to fine copy.
