The final version of Leaves of Grass printed in the author's lifetime. Called the Deathbed Edition due to the timing of its publication in the months before Whitman's death. Printed from the 1888 sheets published by McKay, this edition includes 2 final annexes. With Walt Whitman's statement on the copyright page indicating this as the preferred edition for all future publications. In binding C, and with the publisher's address of, 23 South Ninth Street.
Bound in original green cloth over boards with gilding on the spine, including a facsimile signature. Solid and square with pushing at the spine ends, creases at the head of the spine, some minor loosening of the cloth on the rear board, and light rubbing - all relatively minor by present. Top edge gilt, long and lower edges uncut. Many pages internally uncut. Interior is gently and evenly toned. Steel engraving of Whitman present between pages 28 and 29, tissue guard in place. One repaired internal tear on leaf 227/228, text remains legible. The interior has no notes, markings, inscriptions, prices etc... it is clean and clear throughout.
Includes "Leaves of Grass," "Sands at Seventy," "Good-Bye My Fancy," "A Backward Glance O'er Travel'd Roads," and "Portrait from Life.
