The History and Adventures of the Renowned Don Quixote
Dublin: John Chambers, 1796. Irish Edition. Translated, with some account of the Author's life, by T. Smollett, M.D. Illustrated with engravings by William Bromley, designed after Spanish masterworks. This edition printed in Ireland to demonstrate the strength of Irish printing, based on a 1780 popular Spanish edition. Bound in uniform red marbled paper over boards with 1/4 leather spine and corners. Five raised bands on the spine with gilded lettering. Each volume solid and square with rubbing to the leather and edges, some scuffing to gilding. Showing its age, but well bound. Top edges darkly stained, long and short edges stained with red flecks. Small bookplate on front pastedown. In Vol 1, the dedication page and the first six pages of the subscribers list are detached, but present and with no tears. Interiors are gently and evenly toned with some minor and infrequent spotting.
