Homeri Ilias et Ulyssea cum interpretatione [Homer, Iliad and Odyssey, with commentary]

Basileae [Basil]: Io. Heruagium [Johann Herwagen], 1535. First Thus.

First edition printed by Johann Herwagen in Basil. Text and commentary printed in Greek. With early marginal and text annotations, also in Greek. Bound in early tooled leather over wooden boards with stamped borders and designs. Five raised bands on the spine with the remnants of 3 (of 4) ribbon ties. Heavy wear to the covers with some cracking, splitting at edges, creasing at joints, scuffing, and abrasions. Remains solidly bound. Vellum pastedowns. Pages range from slightly toned, to near new looking with some infrequent discoloration. Pages 133-165, of the Iliad, with some marginal damp-staining. Annotations and underlining principally relegated to the first sections of each epic. Various aged ink and pencil notes on the front pastedown, ffep, ffep verso, and a longer/early inscription in Greek on the title verso (appears to be the same hand as the annotations).

Provenance: Gifted to Macalester College, in St. Paul Minnesota by James J. Hill with stamps on the front pastedown and final preliminary. Embossed by Macalester College on the title page, with a withdrawn stamp on the title verso. James J. Hill was a late 19th and early 20th century Canadian born, American railroad tycoon, dubbed, "The Empire Builder." His company completed the Great Northern Railroad, connecting Minneapolis/St. Paul with Seattle, Washington in 1893.
