Written by William Morris, this is one of the first examples of modern fantasy genre, this work with a heavy emphasis on the romance of the story. Uniformly bound in blue paper over boards with a brown cloth spine. Spine labels missing. Minor edge wear, else square and solid. Rough trimmed edges. Signature of the original owner, T.Ed Harvey, dated 1895 on the first blank with subsequent owner's inscription indicating a gift in 1952 from T.Ed Harvey. Thomas Edmund Harvey was a student at Christ Church, Oxford when he would have received this book. He went on to be a member of parliament, on and off, throughout his life and career. Volume one title and first page with elaborate floral border designed by William Morris. With decorated capital letters and leaves as punctuation in the text. Erratum slip attached at the final blank. A charming set, with good provenance.
