Paulo Orosio Tradotto di Latino in Volgare per Giovanni Guerini da Lanciza Novamente Stampato

Toscolano: Alessandro Paganini, 1520. 1st Italian (Florentine language). The first Italian edition of the 5th century C.E., Historiarum adversus paganos libri VII, and one of the earliest with a Christian emphasis. Bound in contemporary/early limp vellum with a faded ink inscription on the spine. Age toning, some soiling, very old holes, and a few minor chips. Bound solidly. Twentieth century pencil notes on the front pastedown, aged and calligraphic ink notes on the front-free-end-paper, inked numbers on the ffep verso, and aged ink note on the title page; the remainder of the interior is clean and clear from ink or inscriptions. Printed in an early italic font, the ink is dark, and the pages are all legible. Very small marginal dent to the first 6 leaves. Publisher's full page stamped colophon at the end. Small ink to the rear pastedown. Overall, a very well kept and very good copy of this piece. Written at the request of Saint Augustine of Hippo, the work was designed to provide the first universal history from the Christian perspective and as a supplement to Augustine's, City of God.
