First edition, first printing of this collection of political essays by one of the preiminent American essayists at the turn of the 20th century. No jacket. Bounfd in navy blue cloth over boards with gilded lettering on the spine. Sun fading to spine, pushed head of spine, sharp corners, and nominal lean. Top edge gilt, long and lower edges rough cut. Several pages fully uncut. Bookplate of a former owner on the front pastedown. Small and light water stain on the upper corner throughout most of the book, marginal only. Pages are gently and evenly age toned, all text is clean and crisp. Provenance: from the library of John Judson with a laid in slip stating same and a letter from John Judson to the bookseller laid in. John Judson was a poet and author who taught at the University of Wisconsin La Crosse in the 2nd half of the 20th century and was the founder of the Juniper Press.
