First edition, first printing, first printed Scottish edition; in three volumes. Uniformly bound in contemporary half leather and marbled boards with gilded bands, volume numbers, and title on spines. General aging and wear to covers including scuffing to the leather spines and corners, and some scuffing to marbled paper; all holding firm. Each volume is complete including blanks, title pages, and half titles (after the title pages). The interiors are lightly toned, with nominal foxing in places. Volume 2 has some old worm holes in the lower margin of the last set of pages. All text is legible.
An historical romance, set in the years immediately after the English Civil War, the escape of Charles II, and based on contemporary legends. Part of Sir Walter Scotts Waverly Novels which include other titles like: Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, Tales of the Crusades, Waverly, and many more.
Provenance: Each volume has a bookplate on the front pastedown from Sir John Cope, the 11th Baronet of Hanwell in Oxfordshire. The bookplate depicts the family crest. Volume 1 contains additional alpha-numerics in two early hands.
