New York: Rudd & Carleton, 1859. First U.S. Edition. Finely bound by William Bennett, N.Y. Red cloth over boards with 3/4 red leather at spine and corners. Gilded rules to covers. The spine has five raised and gilded bands, gilded decorations between with gilded lettering. Minor rubbing along edges. Top edge gilt. Purple endpapers and new blanks added. Some interior toning, a fading but legible note of praise on the title and below device in the rear. Text is clean and clear. Solid and square. First edition in English, 'translated from the fourth Paris edition, by J. W. Palmer, M.D.' A work exploring concepts of love and relationships from a 19th century French perspective.
