Historia de Gibraltar
Madrid: Don Antonio de Sancha, 1782. First Edition. First edition, first printing of this contemporary Spanish account of the history of Gibralter up to and including part of the Siege of Gibralter (1779-1783) which was still ongoing at the time of publication. At the time of publication, and as indicated by the final paragraph of the text, the expectation was that with the ongoing American Revolution, there was anticipation of Spain reaquiring Gibralter through the siege. With a laid in broadside etching of Gibralter by, Bartholomé Vázquez, with a list of geographical and defensive positions dated 1782. The book is bound in contemporary/early full calf oer boards with five raised bands on the spine. The spine is decorated with designs and flourets in gilding and with a label containing the title in gilding. General aging, rounded and split corners with some loss of board and calf. Chipping at head of spine; original cloth bookmark present, but detached from spine. All edges dyed red. Marbled endpapers with some creasing. Interior is generally toned with some spotting and creasing, but all is solid and legible.
