Dryden's - The Works of Virgil: Containing his Pastorals, Georgics, and Aeneis
London: Jacob Tonson, 1730. Sixth Edition. Translated by Mr. Dryden. With dozens of illustrated engravings throughout. One of the most important, early, english translations of classical works from the master of the English Heroic Poem. Early/contemporary full calf over boards with gilded borders to covers, five raised bands to the spines with gilded decorations, and red labels on spines with gilded lettering. Overall, solidly bound and in very good condition. Condition notes include: rubbing to edges and covers, rounding of corners, some cracked (but holidng) hinges, scuffing, vol 2's red label partially chipped, aged. It appears 2 engravings may (I can only say may as I cannot verify at present) be missing from the between the title page and the first text page of volumes 1-2, and the frontispiece (if one was present) from volume 3. Bookplate from 20th centrury owner on front pastedowns. Marbled endpapers. Some minor internal spots, some old and small ink stains, general ageing, but strong text and clear engravings.
