Sylvie and Bruno - with - Sylvie and Bruno Concluded

London: Macmillan and Co., 1889, 1893. First Editions.

Both first edition, first printings. Sylvie and Bruno Concluded is also in original unclipped jacket with the cash price of 7/6 net on the spine. With illustrations in both volumes by, Harry Furniss. Forming the final novel and story published during the author's lifetime it is split between the contemporary world of Victorian England and Fairyland. While the stories, poems, and journeys in Fairyland are replete with the whimsy and fantasy similar to 'Alice in Wonderland,' the sections taking place in the Victorian age offer images and thoughts of the day including on society, philosophy, and religion. Also, the often reprinted poem, 'The Mad Gardener's Song,' is first printed here. There is also an early fictional element of time travel via a watch used by the sibling pair.

'Sylvie and Bruno' is printed in bright red cloth over boards. With triple gilded borders on the front and rear, and gilded circular frames with images of the title characters, Sylvie on the front and Bruno on the back. The spine is slightly sunned with gilded lettering and designs. Lower right corner is gently bumped, head and tail of spine also gently bumped - otherwise, a solid and square binding. All edges gilded. Black endpapers. Tissue guard in place between frontispiece and title page. Signature of former owner on the half-title. The interior is clean and clear. With advertisements at the rear.

'Sylvie and Bruno Concluded' retains its original dust wrapper with some chipping at corners but overall in very good condition, especially for a 19th century jacket. Uniformly bound in bright red cloth over boards with the same gilded framing and illustrations, though this time depicting 2 other characters on front and rear. Gilded lettering and desings on the spine. The spine is slightly sunned just at the head and tail  - otherwise very solid and square. All edges gilt. Black endpapers. In the prelims only, a few shortly bent corners. Minor spotting in prelims, otherwise the interior is clean and clear. With advertisements at the rear.

Together in a red cloth over boards slipcase.
