Capricciosi & Piaceuoli Ragionamenti

Leiden: Stampati in Cosmopoli, 1660. 2nd Edition. Second printing based on the 1584 edition from John Wolfe. Fore edge painting by Vera Elinor Dutter (1964) depicting "The Dance of the Baccantes," after Marc Charles Gabriel Gleyre, signed and titled on blank opposite first title page. Complete, including "La Puttana Erranta" at the end - some indication this may be the identical 1668 edition, but sources are divided on if this work is added to the 1660 or 1668 version; all available indications are this is the 1660 version. Red morocco triple ruled in gilt. Spine has five raised bands with gilded designs and title; spine repaired with original spine laid down. Gilded fore edges - painting only visible when the long fore edge is splayed. Considered pornographic for centuries, this book remained popular if risque to own; it depicts and compares the sex lives of wives, whores and nuns. Pietro Arentino is remembered as an Italian author, playwrite, poet, satirist and blackmailer.
