I Ieroglifici Ouero Commentarii delle occulte significationi de gl’Egittij, & alter Nationi

Venetia (Venice): Gio: Battista Combi, 1625. Later Edition. A very good 1625 Italian edition of this work on Medieval and Renaissance iconography and Hieroglyphics with hundres of engravings (288 icon images + title plates, end plates, capital letters, and more). Valeriano was a Renaissance scholar and humanist and this is one of his most influential works which was inspired by the then contemporaneous rediscovery of a work related to Hieroglyphics by Horapollo. The majority of this book was first published in Latin in 1556. A second edition of the book included two additional sections authored by, Celio Augustino Curione, who mimicked Valeriano’s style to ensure continuity of the text. The two works together are represented here. The first Italian edition was published in 1604. This book is in good condition and has been relatively recently rebound in a handmade flexible cardboard with new end papers. The title page contains some repairs to tears in the edges. The name, Pippi, was written on the bottom fore edge (may be a different name). Ink marks and staining throughout, but with little impact to the text. Last leaf has small hole impacting part of a few words, as well as some discoloration likely cause by previous binding (no longer present). Some very light and old water stains to the bottom 2%-5% of the pages with limited impacts to text as majority of the book only the margins are impacted. Otherwise, the pages are clean and text and engravings are clear. Page 571 has full page design with slight cropping to the right-side engravings. The 288 engravings (by my count) depict a variety of images including elephants, rhinoceroses, Pegasus, ships, man, and many more. Majoirty of these engravings are in square frames, but some include long obelisks and other shapses.
