Lugduni (Lyon): Apud Antonium Gryphium, 1566. Later Edition. Leather covers repaird and rebacked. Gilded symbol on front and rear boards. Front boards have multiple marks, but repair was professionally completed by Dennis Ruud in June 2021. Spine and edges repaired with original later laid down. New past down inside covers to secure the leather over boards. Repair to the title page where the griffin image had been removed. Complete and solidly bound with understanable issues given age. Text block is tight. All edges gilded. Book includes one of the earliest known poems on chess, Scacchia Ludus, "The Game of Chess" (pages 520-542). Marco Girolamo Vida, was an Italian Humanist, Bishop, and Poet who was comissioned by Leo X to write an epic poem for Christianity. Additionally, he was known for the work Ars Poetica. Scacchia Ludus remained a wildly popular and often reprinted poem on the art of chess; originally published in 1527, this early edition comes from the same year as the author's death.
