Strassburg (possibly): Joane Knoblouch, 1509. Unknown. The complete works of Jean Charlier de Gerson in 2 volumes. Jean Gerson was a prominent 14-15th century scholar, educator, reformer, poet, and Chancellor of the University of Paris. He was a principle figure in the Conciliar movement and figure during the Council of Constance. Jean Gerson was also an early supporter and advocate for Joan of Arc. He played a significant historical role during the Great Schism and fought for the supremacy of Church Councils over the entirety of the church, including the pope. Works are complete with engraved titles in each volume and 2 full page woodcut of Jean in Pilgramage with a dog - this woodcut is attributed to Albrecht Dürer and is considered one of his earliest while apprenticing - no signature in the image. Part 1 title and pilgrim image missing. These woodcuts are colored in contemporary or near contemporary coloring. Both volumes are substantially rubricated throughout. Volumes are in fair to good condition. Worming throughout, including covers with some loss to underlying wooden boards. Embossed pig skin over wooden boards. Four clasps are present, three can attach; on volume 1, the lower claps is missing the front clip. Spines are cracked, but all pages remain tightly bound.
